Rep Me
Just because we don’t think that there’s a problem doesn’t mean that there isn’t one. I was an intelligent young woman who needed information that didn’t come from books. I needed to see with my eyes the realm of possibilities. Of course, I heard you could be whatever you wanted to be as a child, but I also saw the irrationality of that statement. I needed proof where proof wasn’t readily available. I needed representation.
In education, when a teacher teaches a lesson, they have to anticipate student misconceptions. Misconceptions leave students believing they understand a concept only to discover they don't in the next step. Have you ever tried teaching pronouns to students who don't know what nouns are?
More often than not, the fix is easy. Providing a clarifying statement or an example solves the problem. The same can be said for life. Marginalized, unrepresented, or underrepresented people need to see themselves in the world. Media is powerful. It should protect the dreams of the little ones by projecting images of all types of people from all walks of life. They deserve clarity.
